WHAT IS IT?
Cold laser therapy is a form of electrotherapy. Specifically, it is the application of red and near infrared light over injuries or wounds to improve soft-tissue healing and relieve both acute and chronic pain. Cold laser therapy uses cold or sub thermal laser light energy to direct biostimulative light energy to the body’s cells without injuring them in any way. The therapy is precise and accurate. It offers safe and effective treatment for a wide variety of conditions.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
When low-level light waves penetrate the skin, they stimulate mitochondria to increase their absorption of oxygen. This stimulates the mitochondria to produce more cellular energy known as A.T.P. This increase in cellular energy normalizes cellular function and speeds healing by approximately 75%. This has both anti-inflammatory and immunosupportive effects.
IS IT SAFE?
The first cold laser was developed in 1962. Since then, two types of medical lasers have been developed: high power and low power. High-power lasers are used to cut through tissue. Cold lasers are used to stimulate tissue repair through a process of bio stimulation. The energy range of cold laser light lies between 1 and 500 milliwatts, while the energy range for surgical lasers is between 3,000 and 10,000 milliwatts. This type of laser has been used in the United States for more than 20 years with remarkable and well-documented medical results. There are no side effects with Cold Laser Therapy and its benefits have been reported worldwide.
WHAT CAN IT DO FOR ME?
Cold laser therapy is a safe, non-invasive alternative to prescription or over-the-counter medications, which often have significant toxicity and adverse side effects. It can alleviate conditions that have previously been unresponsive to other treatment or for which surgery was considered the only option.
Cold laser therapy can provide the following benefits to patients:
- Relieves acute and chronic pain
- Reduces inflammation
- Stimulates nerve function
- Helps generate new healthy cells and tissues
- Promotes faster wound healing and clot formation
- Stimulates the immune system
WHAT IS THE LENGTH OF TREATMENT?
The length of treatment with cold laser therapy depends on the severity and history of the injury or condition. Treatment is given in small quantities over time. Improvements are usually noted in a short period. Also, cold laser therapy does not require constant, on-going treatments as is often with traditional chiropractic or physiotherapeutic remedies.
HOW IS A TREATMENT PERFORMED?
After an initial consultation, cold laser treatments are performed in the office on a therapy table. The laser is applied to targeted areas. Cold laser treatment requires light-to-skin contact (in most cases). Although some patients often experience a light sensation, no pain is involved. A typical treatment will last two to three minutes per area.
IS IT EXPENSIVE?
The cost is $20 per area, depending on the condition. LLLT is not covered by insurance, however affordable payment plans are available.
